Veilings

Text on translucent paper, by Lucy XC Liu

“Veils choreograph the light. I used translucent silks as filters for filming. Subsequently, the silks drifted out of my viewfinder and took form in these massive sculpture-paintings that mould the light every second, from every angle.

I can deploy no words in drawing you to the sympathy that sparks at points of spiritual contact between us. I am making a language that is tipping into the memory of all the languages that I used to know. By veilings I mean they carry the apparitions and the beyond. They are the ever-changing portal that one measures definitively in the moments of passing through, transported by it, transforming through it. Oh, and the grit crumbling from above, giving way to light flashing through the cracks, sweet patches of dark green moss, the scent of lichen in the moist.

My work could be so perforated with grief that it collapses utterly, but what I collect is trying to stand, to move under the weight, to slip away from my touch. Some happiness numbed by layers and layers of translucent white silks. I am too embroidered to fathom them. The veils gently feather a night of hazards yet those metal, sharp piercing points of precision and hallucinations…No no no, pain, I let it happen I inhale exhale. I love the cold, sharp, crisp. My world is very quiet again with a small snowfall. I want to secure transience in a solid state because I want you to see it, and I wanted to live because of it. I’ve fallen through an ice hole and reached somewhere colourful.

I felt something brushing gently against my cheek.”
